Crops such as Radish, Carrot and Crops from the Allium family. All these vegetables are mainly sown. Their growth and yield can be enhanced by a structure that maintains the hygrometry necessary to improve the germination rate. Fleece with good homogeneity can prevent damage and compaction in the soil structure. Combined with rain this can cause the formation of a "crust" that is hard for seedlings to pierce. Crop cover creates a good thermal effect which improves seedling growth.

Fruit vegetables, cucurbits and soft fruits

Typical crops include strawberry, melon, zucchini, & cucumber. These plants have rough leaves and stems which can abrade and penetrate floating row covers. These vegetables, usually planted, need temperature and humidity to take properly. They generally have an important vegetative development

These vegetables can be either sown or planted. Planted crops are generally sensitive to shocks caused by temperature and humidity variation. Using a floating row cover can significantly reduce the risk of these shocks. Sown crops require a fleece to reduce crusting and maintain the humidity and thermal effect necessary to have a uniform germination. They generally have an important vegetative development.

The main robust stem crop is Sweetcorn. Achieving significant vertical growth before harvest requires a cover with extensibility. As a sown vegetable, Sweetcorn requires special properties of the fleece. Specifically a structure that maintains the hygrometry necessary to improve the germination rate and homogeneity that prevents damage and compaction to the soil structure. Crops also need a good thermal effect to improve seedling growth.

Cabbage, Cauliflower & Kale are all examples of this category. Planted in March - April these are typically covered to ensure the root development. This typically requires covering for about 4 to 6 weeks depending on the species. At the beginning of spring, the soil temperature limits rapid root growth and cold wind can inhibit the vegetative development of the plants. The combined wind-break and greenhouse effect of crop covers allow a rapid growth and effective protection of the foliage.

Peas and Beans of all types are covered from late winter through until typically mid May. The regularity of germination is the key for a good sowing. The fleece increases the uniformity and the speed of germination by preserving the soil structure, maintaining the humidity and increasing the temperature.

Ornamentals ►

Ornamentals includes lawn, young trees and ornamentals in nurseries. Fleece is used for overwintering of the plants in container and ensures an optimal winter protection against:

  • breaking of the exposed parts of the plants (frost, snow, wind)
  • dehydration of twigs, buds and leaves (conifers and evergreen plants)
  • bursting of branches
  • asphyxiation of the roots
  • freezing of the plant
  • sudden variations of temperature

It also protects the lawns in the case of global sowing or in case of overseeding.

Application Info

The Agryl products are supplied in 5 standard strengths - selection can be made on the basis field type and exposure. The range of custom and standard sizes enables farmers to select sizes from 3.40m-30m widths to suit the different field sizes from the UK to Morocco. Agryl products are Z folded to ensure a smooth and rapid unwinding and coverage. Welded with the same polypropylene as the fleece is manufactured which ensures integrity and the option of reinforced edges reduces operator tearing which can slow deployment. Widths offer benefits in speed of installation, collection, storage and waste. It also reduces the number of passes, lowering diesel consumption. Increasing thermal protection is also key to ensuring optimum crop yields. The exact selection is determined by the climate - from Scandinavian winters to Greek summers, and the crops, which also define the planting dates. Virus control and predation - both due to insects can be managed through open field crop cover - where integrity is a key parameter. In certain early planting crops fleece provides cost effective protection against winter ground frosts.
